Dressing Up

When my partner told me he'd like to get back into reenactment, he had to tell me what it was all about - I'd never heard of it!

A bunch of people dress as though they're in another century, and run around a field hitting each other with swords, axes and spears... really?!

Oh, and this takes place beside a village of old-fashioned tents, with campfires and mead and no toilet facilities to speak of...?

I was dubious, but we looked up the local shows so that we could go and investigate. There was an event at Rhuddlan Castle that year, which is only around half an hour's drive from us, so off we went.

It was interesting seeing all the displays, and how the reenactors involved everyone - children included - and everyone had a role to play, no matter how small. Personally, I was interested in the fibre arts and crafts on display, which in this instance was tablet weaving. I watched a mum-and-daughter duo making a woven band in fascination and awe!

A view from above, of a lady in medieval dress, using a tablet weaving loom. The colourful warp threads are strung across several feet, attached to two wooden posts, and she is weaving the wefts among them.

My partner soon found out who was in charge and asked about joining the group. I was still thinking I would be coming along with him rather than making anything of it myself, but I was happy I'd found the thing I could concentrate on!
